It started on Friday night with our ward luau. Anna finally got a chance to wear the Hawaiian dress Dave's Aunt Louise got her last year. (It's a 12 month, but still fits her, the little munchkin) She looked so cute with her Hawaiian flower in her hair I wanted to get a picture of her before we left, but of course as soon as she sees the camera, she takes off faster than a speeding bullet.
So I settled for a shot from behind. She does have a cute one after all.
You think a North Carolinian luau would be just cheesy leis and hula skirts, but oh no, these southerners know how to hula. This was actually a combined activity with the other ward and there's a guy in that ward who used to work at the PCC (Polynesian Cultural Center) so after dinner, they put on quite the show. They even flew in a few relatives to dance for us. There were dances from almost all of the islands, and the young men and young women performed too. They even did the haka.
Anna was thrilled with all of the dancing and got mad when there wasn't enough space in the aisle to do her sweet moves. It was a fun night and I'm glad we could all go together. We literally had to leave with Anna kicking and screaming. And she cried the whole way home. What can I say? She has island fever. I don't blame her.
On Saturday we had a delicious breakfast of banana crepes. I love cooking breakfast, but never do because it's usually just Anna and myself, so it was fun to have a good family breakfast for once. Then we headed to a historic park nearby for "Apple Fest" I have been excited about this for weeks for some reason. We had fun running around to the different little booths of crafts and apple treats. I thought Anna would be excited to go on the horse hayride, but she freaked out about the horses. (Which turned out to be a good thing because the line was toooo long!) We went to the little hatmaker booth and I was surprised that Anna wanted to wear her little Moravian bonnet. She was so excited about her hat and she kept it on the whole time. I snuck a picture while she was looking at some toys.
Lookin cute in her bonnet
This is the old Moravian Church from 1788. The historic Bethabra Park is where some of the German Moravians settled in the 18th century. I love going to this park. It's beautiful and I love that it's a part of the city's history.
That night Dave and I went out on our first date since we moved here. I babysat a little boy in our ward a few weeks ago and so his mom wanted to make good on the trade. I was really nervous to drop Anna off because she's never been babysat anywhere besides Grandma's. I did have to have a babysitter come to our house once so I could go to a primary meeting, but this was the first "drop off" babysitter. I thought for sure she would break down when we left like she does for nursery every week. We snuck out with no cries! phew! Dave and I enjoyed a movie and dinner which was long overdue. We haven't had a date since our cross-country roadtrip. Yes, I'm counting that as a date. And when we went to pick her up, she could have cared less that we were there. She was having too much fun playing with her friend Milo and all of his toys. I guess my worrying was for nothing. I probably won't ever stop worrying though. It's just what I do.
Sunday came around and I had to talk in church, which wasn't exactly part of the fun weekend, but having it over with made Sunday afternoon even better. My talk was about family, and it made me appreciate mine even more. And it was just a good weekend together. One for the books, or the blog, that is.
